As a person living in the south I have been bombarded with this flag my entire life. I have seen this flag hanging from poles in front of peoples houses, in public buildings, stitched onto hats, stamped onto belt buckles, and flying by the multiples from the backs of pick up trucks. With this performance I use a substance made of charcoal, gel medium, and my own hair to physically black out the face of this flag. With these actions I am physically and metaphorically enforcing my blackness onto this symbol of oppression and racism. I have only ever known this flag to be hateful and to have this hateful relic so normalized into our society is appalling. To have people fighting to keep this obvious sign of oppression alive is honestly terrifying.
